Erika Fekete – Where light meets glass

Our gallery also presents the unique LED-backlit glass mosaics of Erika Fekete, an artist based in southern Slovakia. She tells the story of her artistic path and of how her works come to life in her own words:

„I first encountered mosaic art in 2016, while travelling abroad. I saw a strikingly beautiful lamp decorated with mosaics, and it captivated me instantly. That was the moment I decided to learn this special artistic technique and to try to create something truly unique.

Not long after I returned home, chance brought me together with a lady who worked with glass mosaics and introduced me to the basics of the technique. I am grateful for her help to this day.

Already when I finished my very first piece, I knew I had found my own path. I enjoyed every moment of making mosaics. It was wonderful to watch light bring the glass to life, and to see the colours reveal a different face from every angle. It is no exaggeration to say that a completely new world opened up before me — I fell in love with mosaic art.

Most of my works are born from my own imagination, my dreams and my inner world. I love challenges, new solutions, and the process through which every single piece becomes an independent and unrepeatable work of art.

Many artists around the world make mosaics, but I had never come across the combination of a composition built on a glass base with LED backlighting anywhere in the neighbouring countries. This inspired me to develop my own technique further and to make light an organic part of my works.

Thanks to the backlighting, the same artwork offers two entirely different visual experiences. In natural daylight, softer and more restrained shades prevail, while when illuminated the colours become more intense and the glass creates a radiant, almost living effect. In a sense, two different works appear within the very same frame.

This duality demands particular care. I have to select the colours and glass elements so that the composition is harmonious both in natural light and with the backlighting on.

I never use pre-made mosaic pieces or ready-made shapes. I cut every single element by hand from Tiffany glass sheets, and some of my works are enriched with Swarovski crystals. The motifs are born from my own ideas, but I also create personalised works to individual commission.

Depending on its size and level of detail, a glass mosaic can take anywhere from two to eight weeks to complete. Creating two entirely identical works is virtually impossible, so the originality and uniqueness of each of my pieces is guaranteed.

I trust that my works will bring joy to many people and will find their way into homes where they create light, colour and a special atmosphere for many years to come.“
